Borders taking pre-orders on 7″ competition to iPad

Steve Jobs made a couple comments about the world of 7″ screened tablet computers. Less than a week later, many of us received an email from Borders offering us the oportunity to pre-order their new 7″ eBook reader… that does a lot more than just read eBooks.

The ad reads that the Velocity Micro Cruz Reader also handles WiFi internet browsing and your music/video collection. No mention yet what the desktop side looks like or if you can order eBooks, music or videos through Borders to install. Note that the Expanded devices make it a ‘tablet‘ instead of just a ‘reader’.

There will always be some interest in new devices, and we know we will be seeing a few of these pop up in meetings with clients. Our first reaction from the screen shots is that they have done away with the dozen buttons on the old UMPC formfactor… a very good thing! Let’s see what someone brags about when in a meeting and want to show off their ‘reader’ against the iPad.
